Emmy-winner Allison Janney is joining the cast of Showtime’s upcoming drama “Masters of Sex” for an extended arc, the network announced Thursday.
Janney will appear in five episodes of the hour-long drama, where she will play Margaret Scully, the wife of Beau Bridges‘ character, University Provost Barton Scully.
“Masters of Sex” takes on two pivotal figures in the sexual revolution — Masters and Johnson. Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan star as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, whose research set off the sexual revolution and landed them on the cover of Time magazine. The provocative series will chronicle “their unusual lives, romance and the pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson,” according to the press release.
Margo Martindale, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Caitlin Fitzgerald and Teddy Sears also co-star. Academy Award nominee John Madden (“Shakespeare in Love”) directed the pilot episode.
Production on the first season is underway in Los Angeles.
The series is based on Thomas Maier’s book Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love.
“Masters of Sex” will premiere on Sunday, September 29 at 10/9c on Showtime.
