Sharp-tongued comedian Chelsea Handler appeared on the “Today” Monday where Matt Lauer decided right off the bat to address the pair’s feud that made headlines recently.
“Can we start by just saying thank you for ending this simmering feud we apparently had going,” Lauer began.
“Well, I don’t know why you always have to attack me publicly,” Handler stated in her trademark dry humor. “It’s like you have a vendetta against me.”
“I thought it was the other way around?,” Lauer shot back.
“Oh, was it me?” Handler replied innocently.
“See, that’s just it,” Lauer laughed. “I have so many feuds going with so many people right now I can’t even remember exactly what we were feuding about.”
“I realize that, you’re very controversial … you have a worse reputation than I do,” Handler joked. “So thank you for apologizing.”
Earlier this year, Handler had made a joke about NBC’s “Today” turmoil that was twisted in the news, as Handler puts it.
“No, I was just making fun of you or Al or somebody and it just got carried away,” Handler explained, adding that the media buzz claimed “NBC Brass had to come and talk to me and say ‘back off of Matt Lauer’.”

On hand to promote the third season of her mockumentary “After Lately,” which premieres Monday night at 10:30/9:30c on E!, Handler then stuck around for the fourth hour of “Today” to make up with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb after blowing them off a few months ago, a snub they’ve been “beating like a dead horse” according to Chelsea. The “Happy Hour” duo praised the E! star for actually showing up this time, since Handler bailed on a scheduled appearance with them claiming she was sick, only to appear the same day on another talk show. Oops.
There are no hard feelings though — Kathie Lee Gifford even appears on the new season of “After Lately,” where Handler calls her “the white Oprah.”
For Monday night’s season premiere, Chelsea’s guest is “ Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, with whom she also is engaged in a feud (who isn’t she fighting with?).
“What a piece…I tell him what I think of him,” Handler joked when Hoda asked if Leno knew he would be skewered on Chelsea’s show.
“Yeah, Jay Leno knows what’s up,” Handler added. “I’ve told him plenty of times on-air, off-air, what I think of him. And he knows and he’s okay with it, and that’s why we get along so well.”
When Handler was asked what sparked her feud with Leno, this was her explanation:
“Well, we slept together several times. He’s married so obviously we were with his wife as well, so it was a three-way,” she joked.
In addition to Leno and Gifford, other big-name guests Handler welcomes this season on “After Lately” include Reese Witherspoon, Kate Beckinsale, Charlize Theron, Johnny Knoxville and Melissa Etheridge.
The new season of “After Lately” debuts Monday at 10:30/9:30c on the E! Channel.
