“Today” and Matt Lauer have made a lot of headlines in the past year for various reasons, but one story that won’t haunt the show is “fingergate.”
During Friday morning’s edition of the morning show, Lauer made a joke at co-host Savannah Guthrie’s expense, saying that Guthrie had never used a vacuum before.
The cameras then went to Guthrie who made a quick finger gesture toward Lauer. That movement caused “Today” fans to think that the gesture was actually her flipping the bird to Lauer while on the air.
However, Guthrie tells a different story, posting on Twitter that she was merely pointing in Lauer’s direction, claiming that she merely pointed in Lauer’s direction because of the joke. She wrote, “”Folks!! That was my INDEX finger! Photo evidence proving my innocence coming!” and adding the hashtag #fingergate.
She later posted a screengrab of the event (above) which is blurry, but seems to back up her claims.
Here’s the video to decide for yourself…
