Devin Velez may have placed eight out of tens of thousands of “American Idol” hopefuls, but the eliminated contestant may stay true to his roots after the dust has settled. He told reporters Friday that he is debating whether to return to his pre-“Idol” job as a barista at Starbucks, “for the money reason.”
“It was my job,” Devin said. “That was another passion of mine.”
But he can’t expect things to go back to normal, can he?
“It might be a little hard, now that people know who I am,” he said. “I’m not just going to be writing ‘caramel macchiato’ on cups. I might be signing them.”
Devin also said he’d like to go back to school at Rickover Naval Academy in Chicago. His high school prom is coming up, and he’s hoping to attend.
“My dream has always been to win Prom King,” he said. He already won Homecoming King before his rise to fame. “If this dream was achievable, I don’t think that one’s too far out of reach.
The title of American Idol, however, did prove to be out of reach for Devin, when the bilingual singer was eliminated after a performance of “Tracks of My Tears,” despite great reviews from the judges’ panel.
But Devin was also part of the ill-fated trio of boys, whom Nicki Minaj ordered off the stage. Did that have anything to do with his elimination?
“I know where Nicki was coming from,” he said, agreeing with her assessment that the trio performed like it was Hollywood Week group night.
But “when she went crazy was when she was like, ‘Get off the stage!’ It was like, ‘Whoa, Miss Minaj, I need you to calm down, please. We’re still human. We still have feelings.’”
Devin described Nicki as having “multiple personalities. ”You never know what you’re going to get with Nicki Minaj. She could have been upset because the night before she wore the same color dress as Mariah, or she was on time. We never know.”
Still, said Devin, he loved Nicki as a judge, even if she left the theater before saying goodbye.
It was Mariah Carey who connected with him most after his elimination, telling Devin to contact her down the road if nothing works out for his career.
“Hearing things like that from Mariah Carey is just crazy,” he said, “because she is so huge.”
Keith Urban gave Devin a bear hug, and Randy Jackson also told Devin to stay in touch.
So with only two guys left in the competition, does Devin think his gender has a chance at the title?
“The odds are scary right now, but if the guys step it up, they do have a chance,” he said.
“The talent that’s left is amazing.”
