With NBC confirming Jimmy Fallon’s promotion to replace Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” next Spring, it should come as no surprise that David Letterman would address the situation.
The host of CBS’ “The Late Show,” who once famously lost out on the NBC hosting gig to Leno, took on his arch-rival in his monologue for tonight’s episode. CBS released a video showing Letterman feelings over the news, saying, “I got a call from my mom today, she said ‘Well, David, I see you didn’t get ‘The Tonight Show’ again.”
Letterman got serious, however, pointing out the similarities between Leno and Conan O’Brien several years ago and Leno and Fallon today.
“This happened once before with Conan O’Brien, and then they had to bring Jay back, and so he had to start his show all over again, and now it looks like the same thing is happening,” he told the audience. “And I just… I don’t get this.”
Letterman did congratulate Leno on his retirement, however.
“He’s retiring, so it says, and good for him. I’ve known him 38 years. I’ve known Jay Leno for 38 years…so now he’s out again, but going out on top,” he said. “So congratulations to Jay, a job well done.”
But, Letterman did take one final poke at his arch-rival, making Leno the topic of his Top Ten list. Here are three that have been released.
No. 5: If you broke down on the freeway, Jay was always right there with a camera crew to help.
No. 4. Can’t remember the name of the bit, but it’s the one where Jay is walking.
No 3. He’s mom’s favorite talk show host.
