NBC News anchor Brian Williams reported the news that “Marnie” has emerged as one of the top name choices for American baby girls.

But he never mentioned that his daughter, Allison Williams, plays a character named Marnie on HBO’s “Girls.”

In a brief story seen Friday night on “The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” the anchorman reported on a new list of popular baby names put out by a Web site devoted to baby-naming called

The names are the ones that have emerged so far in 2013 as the most popular for boys and girls, Williams said. For boys, he reported, Nameberry is alleging a reemergence of “Bruce” and “Christian.”

Then he reported on the girls’ names. “The big activity is among girls,” he said. “The folks at Nameberry say Marnie is suddenly hot because there’s a character named Marnie on an HBO series. Also Marlowe, Nelly and Mavis.”

Our take: We suspect proud papa Williams was just being cheeky in not mentioning the title of “Girls” (referring to it only as “an HBO series”) or his daughter and the character she plays. In fact, we suspect he added this story to the “Nightly News” story list precisely so he could deliver it the way he did Friday night.
