‘DWTS’ Week 5 Elimination: No Laughing Matter for One Comedian?

"DWTS": Cheryl Burke and D.L. Hughley (Photo: ABC)

On Tuesday night’s “Dancing with the Stars,” I was expecting one of our comedians would be telling their last joke on the show. Both D.L. Hughley and Andy Dick put themselves in danger of elimination by only scoring 18 points out of 30, and I felt the only other person who might go home was boxer Victor Ortiz, because he didn’t seem to be getting votes this season.

So, we were on the road to another celebrity biting the dust on “DWTS”….

A big pro dance number that host Tom Bergeron called “space invasion disco” opened the show before we went into some results information. Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough were declared safe and Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson were told they were in jeopardy. Wow, I actually didn’t think Ingo would be in play tonight, so that was a surprise.

Then they unfurled their traditional backstage footage from last night and we relived Judge Len Goodman’s “side-by-side challenge.” D.L. said he’d rather be on the set of “Splash,” which was funny.

The encore dance was awarded to Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff, who were so ably assisted by returning pros Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Anna Trebunskaya. I enjoyed their jive just as much as last night, but someone in the press room yelled, “That was close!” when Jacoby did his thrilling jump over Karina’s head and this time, almost hit her in the noggin. It looked like Karina rubbed her head later in the dance, whew, but she seemed to be okay. Maybe the football player just grazed her, which would be more than enough to cause a migraine.

Rehearsal footage showed how Maks and Val C. interacted with each other as brothers. “You came an hour and a half late to rehearsal,” Val grumped to his brother as he did a yoga move. Val and Zendaya Coleman, whom Maks coached this week, were then called safe. Boy, shocker there, huh?

Last night, we saw that Victor had wanted to go to the bathroom right before his dance and he had to make a really quick run for it. Then back to Tuesday’s reality–the boxer and his pretty partner Lindsay Arnold got the bad news that they were in jeopardy.

Len did a pointless time-filling segment called “pep talk” for the remaining dancers, which came off like a bad TV commercial. Host Tom must have thought so, too, because he quipped to Len that he thought he was going to hear about “the horrible side effects of medication.”

Next, Jacoby and Karina were declared safe to dance again and Aly and Mark followed them into Week 6.
Tom reminded us that music icon Stevie Wonder would be performing next week, accompanying all the dancers, and there would also be a team dance. Brooke Burke-Charvet announced the teams would be picked after the show, but they knew already that Team Paso would dance to Wonder’s “Higher Ground” and Team Samba to “Superstition.” Andy joked that he wanted to be on Kellie’s team, so it would be known as “Team Pickler Dick!” Ha. I sure hoped it wouldn’t be Andy’s last night on “DWTS.”

After a Bollywood-themed number by Selena Gomez, we were back to footage from last night “Kill it babe. You know you can,” Peta Murgatroyd told Sean Lowe before they hit the floor and we were treated to more bromance nonsense between Sean and coach Tristan MacManus.

Sharna Burgess shouted “Arriba, Arriba!” as her partner Andy Dick flew over the floor on a zip line in their matador-themed number.

Tom said the marriage between Sean and his fiancé Catherine was going to be broadcast by ABC in August. Did we know that already? Sean and Peta were declared safe and so were Andy and Sharna, but D.L. and Cheryl Burke were in question.

So who would go home? It was Ingo, D.L., and Victor in the bottom three. But then Tom announced Ingo and Kym were safe!

D.L. and Victor were the bottom two dwellers.

In the end, the celebrity going home Tuesday night was…D.L. Hughley! At last I was right that the comedian would be leaving. Poor D.L. He’d given it his best shot but had had such a rough time. He said the only thing he’d miss was Cheryl. D.L. dissed Len on his way out, but he kept smiling!
