Sportscaster Al Michaels was stopped and detained by police in Santa Monica, Calif., Friday night on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to TMZ.com.

TMZ is reporting the story here, citing “law enforcement sources” who told the Web site that Michaels was arrested when he went through a police checkpoint at around 10 p.m. Friday night.

He was detained after failing a field-sobriety test, the story said, and remained in custody until after 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

TMZ’s sources said Michaels, 68 — one of the premiere broadcast voices for NFL football and other sports — was polite throughout his arrest and detention.

Michaels is currently the play-by-play announcer for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” telecasts. He’s been seen and heard on prime-time NFL telecasts for 26 years, stretching back to “Monday Night Football” on ABC.

As of Sunday morning, there was no statement from NBC or Michaels. The Associated Press confirmed the story at around midday on Sunday.
