Is “Chicago Fire” coming back for a second season?

If you listen to “Chicago Fire” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf, it sure sounds like it. In fact, we may even get a spinoff of the NBC series, although Wolf is tight-lipped about that.

“We even know what the first episode of the third season is,” Wolf told reporters at NBC’s Summer Press Day, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We are definitely looking at the remainder of this season as a jumping-off point for next season.”

Wolf seemed to confirm reports that a spinoff of “Chicago Fire” is already in the works, with this season’s finale designed to serve as a launch point for a potential new show about the Chicago Police Department.

“Certainly a possibility,” Wolf said.

“Chicago, it is the heart of this country,” he told the press. “It doesn’t seem strange to have firefighters in Chicago doing this stuff. That’s what Chicago is. The city of big shoulders and the city that represents the heart of this country and the core values. Nobody questions it.”

With the “Law & Order” series often featuring ripped-from-the-headlines storylines, would Wolf consider an episode that echoed the recent tragedy in Boston?

“It’s tough dealing with terrorism. It’s very tough,” Wolf said. “The last thing we want to do is exploit a tragedy and that is so specific that it would be difficult.”
