Executive producer Gareth Neame announced Wednesday that “Downton Abbey” is officially adding its first black character to the hit British period drama.

Actor Gary Carr has signed on to play a jazz singer named Jack Ross, who’s described as “a charming and charismatic” young man, on the upcoming fourth season of the show. Carr has previously appeared on the British series “Bluestone 42” and “Death in Paradise.”

“We are delighted to introduce another fantastic, dynamic character to ‘Downton Abbey,’ Neame said in a statement. “His addition will bring interesting twists to the drama which we can’t wait for viewers to see in Series four.”
