Zach Galifianakis got some surprise help from his “Hangover” co-stars when he guest-hosted “Saturday Night Live” this weekend on NBC.

The two stars — Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms — turned up in a “Jennifer Aniston lookalike” contest in which they were costumed, along with Galifianakis, as Jen — including her famous hair.

In the sketch, the bearded Galifianakis played an angry contest participant whose costume landed him in last place in the competition, while Cooper and Helms played the event’s two winners who tied for the top spot.

Their joint walk-on appearance during the “Jennifer Aniston” sketch took the “SNL” studio audience completely surprise.

It was also an opportunity for the three to draw attention to their new “Hangover” movie, “Hangover 3,” which opens May 24.

A quick review of early reviews of Galifianakis’ performing and guest-hosting skills on the Web indicated it was one of the funniest shows of the year. “The actor played a role in nearly every comedic segment, and we think Galifianakis trails only Justin Timberlake as the best host of the season,” said The Hollywood Reporter.

We don’t disagree with that assessment. Galifianakis killed in his opening monologue and in a number of sketches in which he appeared, including a game show based on “Game of Thrones” — “The Game of Game of Thrones.” This sketch featured another surprise celebrity walk-on by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister in the HBO series.

We liked Zach from his opening monologue on through the whole show. In his monologue, he demonstrated his gift for stand-up comedy — part of which was delivered while seated and playing a grand piano.

Among the headline-making stories from last week that made their way onto “SNL” this weekend was the revelation by Martha Stewart in a “Today” show interview that she posted a profile on Match.com to find a boyfriend. Her admission resulted in a savage Match.com commercial spoof seen on “SNL” with Kate McKinnon as Martha.
