New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will guest co-host the “Today” show, NBC announced Tuesday.

Christie will co-host the second hour of “Today” on the May 24th show, which will be broadcast live from the Jersey shore. It’s part of the morning show’s “Great American Adventure” road trip sweeps special.

The coast-to-coast road trip will take the “Today” cast and crew to five U.S. destinations in one week, starting in Hawaii and ending at the Jersey shore, which is still recovering from Superstorm Sandy. There also will be stops at Yellowstone National Park, Chicago and Orlando along the way.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Republican governor confirmed reports that Christie underwent weight-loss surgery in February.

Christie is running for a second term as governor of the Garden State.

By the way, Christie isn’t the first controversial political figure to guest host “Today” — Sarah Palin has also done it.
