Attention, people all over the world: “Soul Train” might be staging a comeback, thanks to Nick Cannon.
The show business entrepreneur and host of “America’s Got Talent” on NBC is reportedly angling to buy the “Soul Train” brand in a “multimillion dollar deal” that would result in a new, updated version of the legendary dance-music show.

Few other details were available about the deal, particularly its chances of coming to fruition.
Cannon, 32, who is married to Mariah Carey, has a “first look” deal with NBC for TV projects he develops, which means a new “Soul Train” could be produced under the auspices of NBC and likely sold to local stations for weekend syndication.
The original “Soul Train” aired in various incarnations from 1971 to 2006. Created as a black, soul music alternative to “American Bandstand” and other pop-music showcases of the 1960s, “Soul Train” was famous for drawing the top acts in soul music who would perform (usually lip-synching) while young African-Americans danced in afros and bell-bottoms. The show used a variety of theme songs in its long history, but the best-known had to be “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia),” which was heard from 1973 to 1975, with its famed “People all over the world …” refrain. Cornelius died last year of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the stories about a “Soul Train” revival, the new version would feature top acts from contemporary pop music and, of course, a new generation of “Soul Train” dancers.
