“Law & Order: SVU” ended Season 14 with an OMG of a cliffhanger: a psychopath holding a gun to Olivia’s head!
In Wednesday night’s season finale, the routine arrest of a man exposing himself in Central Park becomes anything but routine when the perp, whose true identity is a mystery (and his burnt-off finger tips prevent any finger-print matching), ends up outsmarting the DA’s team every step of the way.
During the trial, the defendant’s attorney (guest star Lauren Ambrose of “Six Feet Under”) gets under the skin of Det. Olivia Benson, who’s been called as a witness. The lawyer manages to discredit her, claiming Benson’s “obsessed” with the criminal. The judge falls for it and declares a mistrial, and the villain walks … he walks right on over to Olivia’s apartment, in fact.
After the sting of defeat, an emotional Benson is sent home by her boss — where the bad guy is waiting for her in the dark. In the final scene of the episode, Olivia steps into her kitchen and the crazy dude catches her by surprise and points a gun at her head … and then the screen goes dark.
Now, viewers are left hanging with Benson in mortal danger all summer long!
Since series star Mariska Hargitay is such an integral part to the last “L&O” series standing, normally we’d say, don’t worry about her fate. However, Hargitay’s future on the long-running cop drama is perpetually up in the air, so then again, maybe viewers should worry.
It’s worth noting that Hargitay has not officially signed on to return for a 15th season of “SVU” — which has already been renewed by NBC — so perhaps that’s why producers left the cliffhanger open-ended in case Hargitay doesn’t come back.
NBC has not commented on contract negotiations, but the ever-reliable “anonymous sources” say the Emmy winner is reportedly in talks to extend her contact for a new one-year deal, according to TV Line.
