Nice Day for a Murder: Sunny ‘Glades’ Starts New Season

It’s more than 2,300 miles from the Florida Everglades to Wyoming, but A&E travels the distance in just two hours Monday night with the season premieres of “The Glades” followed by “Longmire.”

As “The Glades” starts its fourth season — Monday (Memorial Day) at 9/8c on A&E — cocky homicide detective Jim Longworth (yes, both of A&E’s crimefighters have the prefix “Long” in their names) finds himself sifting through the history of an old Florida family when a young woman is murdered with an axe, in a plantation house that dates back to before the Civil War.

It’s a ghost story that will have the matter-of-fact Det. Longworth (Matt Passmore) questioning his own pragmatic belief that a spirit world cannot possibly exist. At the same time, he’s awaiting a decision by girlfriend Callie (Kiele Sanchez) on whether she’ll accept his marriage proposal and move back to Florida.

We won’t spoil the show by revealing her decision, but we do know this: You won’t have to wait until Episode Two to learn what she’ll do. (We know this because we’ve seen the season premiere — thanks to A&E.)

But we don’t mind revealing our opinion of “The Glades”: We like it for, among other reasons, its Florida setting. We just happen to like crime shows that are set in Florida, where the sunny weather stands in such stark contrast to the crimes being dramatized — from “Miami Vice” to “CSI: Miami” and, of course, “Dexter.”

You might say these shows put us in a Sunshine State of mind. “The Glades” premieres Monday night at 9/8c on A&E. “Longmire,” starring Robert Taylor, premieres at 10/9c. Read our “Longmire” preview: Tale of Two Lawmen: A&E’s ‘Longmire’ Vs. FX’s ‘Justified’.

We happen to have tons of “Miami Vice” episodes, including this one with Julia Roberts:
