If you have a “Game of Thrones” fans in your life, go easy on them today, they’ve been traumatized by Sunday night’s penultimate episode of the third season, “The Rains of Castamere.”
But it’s better known to “GOT” book readers as “The Red Wedding.”
Two beloved characters met their end at what’s become known to “Thrones” devotees as one of the most brutal, notorious scenes from A Song of Ice and Fire in the fantasy book series from author George R.R. Martin, who shows no mercy when it comes to killing off major characters. We’re talking beheading Ned Stark territory here. We’re talking wiping out the core of Stark family, in fact.
DID WE MENTION, SPOILER ALERT!?
At the end of Sunday night’s gut-wrenching episode, Robb Stark (Richard Madden) and his mother Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) were gruesomely murdered, along with Robb’s pregnant wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin) and his men, when a wedding feast turned into a bloodbath. The Lannisters send their regards!
The act of vengeance was ordered by Walder Frey (David Bradley), who was still bitter that the King in the North spurned Frey’s daughter and refused to uphold his obligation to marry her, choosing true love (and a prettier face) instead. His daughter Roslin was instead given to Edmure and the disturbing twist of fate for the cursed Stark family followed the wedding (and bedding) ceremony.
If that wasn’t enough heartbreak, all of this happens just as Arya Stark is delivered to the wedding to be reunited with her family. Who are now dead. The young girl hides outside in the immediate aftermath of the Stark massacre and watches in horror as even the wolves were slaughtered too.
The devastating outcome: House Stark is decimated and Winterfell is in ruins. As for the remaining Stark children, Jon Snow is wanted for death and is on the run after failing to kill an innocent man at the order of the Wildlings; Arya remains in the clutches of Sandor; and Bran discovers he has some seriously spooky powers.
