'Mystery Science Theater 3000' (Shout Factory)

Mystery Science Theater 3000

There may be no finer — and certainly no funnier — meditation on monsters than this collection of episodes from the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000.’ As food for thought, we are served subterranean slime people, a giant praying mantis, Soviet spies and — perhaps the most terrifying of all — enormous teenagers from the disturbing menu of America’s twisted psyche. Battling these Goliaths for us with their slingshots of sass and silliness are Joel, Mike and their robot henchmen Tom Servo and Crow.  The monsters are gruesome and the movies even more so, but the riffs are risible and retaliatory, proving definitively that revenge is actually a dish best served funny. Titles include: The Slime People, Rocket Attack U.S.A., Village Of The Giants and The Deadly Mantis. Buy the XXVII DVD right here.

The Jack Benny Program

For this rare, live television adaptation of the 1945 feature film The Horn Blows At Midnight, Jack Benny reprised his comic role as Athanael, the trumpeting angel sent to destroy Earth. Broadcast live from 1952 to 1961, the landmark and award-winning television series Omnibus presented a stunning variety of programs about the arts, sciences and humanities with an eye to creating what its visionary producer Robert Saudek called “educational entertainment.” The critical failure of the 1945 feature film version became a running gag on ‘The Jack Benny Program,’ but the Omnibus presentation is considered a genuine treasure, buried until now. The Jack Benny Program and its legendary star are counted among the most dazzling jewels in the crown of American comedy. From its beginnings as an immensely popular radio program to its heyday on television, the daily trials and tribulations of the beloved comedian kept millions of fans laughing for over 30 years. Here at last are 18 long-lost episodes — unseen since their original broadcast — that have been lovingly restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Jack, Don, Mary, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and a constellation of guest stars are all here in this first-of-its-kind DVD collection of The Jack Benny Program. Buy the Lost Episodes DVD right here.

For eight years, the old dogs of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad—veteran detectives Jack Halford (James Bolam), Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong, Garrow’s Law), and Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman, The Sweeney)—have been a close-knit team. Then Jack drops a bombshell: he’s quitting. Retiring. And this time, he means it. Before long, Sandra finds a replacement in retired detective Steve McAndrew (Denis Lawson). Featuring sharp scripts, an outstanding cast, and a deft mix of comedy and drama, ‘Honest’ is now available for the first time in the U.S. on DVD. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards, ‘No’ is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. The film, which won the Cannes

Film Festival’s 2012 Art Cinema Award and was the Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012 and Telluride Film Festival 2012 is based on the true story surrounding the 1988 referendum on Augusto Pinochet’s presidency in Chile. Facing international pressure to legitimize his dictatorship, Pinochet created a national plebiscite giving the citizens of Chile the opportunity to vote for or against extending his rule. Starring Gael García Bernal (Rudi Y Cursi, The Motorcycle Diaries) as a young advertising executive brought in to spearhead the opposition’s “NO” campaign, the film is a smart and insightful, yet humorous look at how the people of Chile had an opportunity to end a dictatorship at the ballot box. Bonus features include commentary with Director Pablo Larraín and actor Bernal, as well as a Q&A with Bernal. In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote “YES” or “NO” to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the “NO” persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free from oppression. Jack Taylor

Starring Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, The Iron Lady), ‘Jack Taylor,’ Set 1 is now available on DVD. Based on the bestselling crime fiction by Ken Bruen and filmed on location against the rugged backdrop of western Ireland, this gripping series follows Jack Taylor, a forty-something ex-cop trying to earn a living as a private detective in his native Galway. Self-destructive, pigheaded, and overly fond of the bottle, Taylor has burned a lot of bridges, but he still has a knack for uncovering ugly truths. Broadcast in the U.K. on Channel 5 in Feb. 2013 but available to U.S. audiences for the first time, Jack Taylor has already been renewed for additional episodes. The DVD 3-disc set includes the first three feature-length mysteries: The Guards, The Pikemen, and The Magdalen Martyrs. A noir thriller in the vein of Justified, Case Histories and Single-Handed, Jack Taylor captures a country in transition, caught between the certainties of the past and the anxieties of a post-bubble future. Those same strains play out in the life of Jack Taylor, a man seeking to reinvent himself in a community with a long memory and an uneasy attitude towards change. A Place at the Table

50 million people in the U.S.—one in four children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger’s Mariana Chilton, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges.
