Matt Lauer opened the vault on his visit to Howard Stern’s Sirius XM radio show on Wednesday.

The “Today” anchor got candid about his relationships with former on-air partners Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira during the interview, and they appeared to be quite different.

On Couric, Lauer said that her partnership left a lasting impression.

“It’s like the St. Pauli Girl commercial: You always remember your first,” Lauer said of Couric, who co-anchored with him from 1994 to 2006.

Of course, there were bumps in the road.

“We worked together for 10 years,” he noted. “Was every day a bed of roses? No, of course not. We had our moments where there was probably tension. But overall, we are very much the same person. We have very similar senses of humor, and I thought we had a good and easy chemistry.”

When asked about his feelings toward Couric, Lauer admitted he was struck.

“I think… every man in America was attracted her,” he said of the “Katie’ host, before noting that she had the best of both worlds. “If she’s a 9 or 10 physically, she’s a 14 because-and I hate to do that-she’s got a great personality. She’s fun.”

However, Lauer said he never considered a romance, noting that it would have ruined their relationship, and joked that “She would have been knocking on my door constantly. She would have never left me alone.”

As for Vieira, Lauer said that he “constantly wanted to hug her.”
