‘Mad Men’ Finale Preview: What’s Eating Don Draper?

Once again, another “Mad Men” season is drawing to a close with a question that seems all-too familiar: What’s Don Draper’s problem, anyway?

He’s a partner in a successful New York ad agency circa 1968, he lives on Park Avenue with a young, pretty wife who stars on a network soap opera, and he’s ridiculously handsome.

Hey, Don Draper, what’s eating you anyway? The question takes on a great degree of importance as “Mad Men” fans await the final episode of the show’s sixth season this Sunday night (June 23) at 10/9c on AMC.

What’s Don’s problem? It comes down to two habits: Booze and adultery. Can he kick them both? What about one of them?

What will happen to Don (Jon Hamm) is, of course, one of the key plot points still up in the air as “Mad Men” nears the end of another season. With that in mind, here’s our list of the loose-end storylines we hope the show ties up in the season finale:

1) Don Draper: Drunk and disorderly: On the surface, he’s still the stern, buttoned-down ad man he’s always been at the office. But his personal life’s a shambles. Cheating with the downstairs neighbor all season (while wife Megan — Jessica Pare — wonders what’s wrong with him); sneaking vodka into his orange juice at breakfast; disappearing for long periods during his workdays; napping in his office for hours on end — something’s gotta give. The key questions: Will Megan finally get wise to his cheating? And will his teen daughter Sally (Kiernan Shipka) let the secret slip, since she witnessed one of his trysts and hasn’t spoken to him since?

2) Benson hedges: The mystery of Bob Benson (James Wolk) — the glib, handsome client rep who’s been a thorn in Pete Campbell’s side all season — was finally divulged last week: Basically, Bob’s an empty suit who’s been lying to everyone about his background. Many observers felt the Bob Benson storyline came to an end in last week’s episode when Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) confronted Bob in his office. While he seemed contrite last week, we have the feeling we haven’t heard the last of Bob. The question: Will Bob turn the tables on Pete? And, what was the purpose of bringing in this mysterious Bob Benson character in the first place this season?

3) Ted and Peggy: So everyone in the office seems to realize partner Ted Chaough (Kevin Rahm) has a thing going on with Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss). But as regular “Mad Men” watchers, we’re not sure we care enough about these two getting together. So the question for them is: Where is this relationship headed? And if it doesn’t have larger consequences for the agency or for any other characters in the show, what’s the point?

The sixth-season finale of “Mad Men” airs Sunday (June 23) at 10/9c on AMC.
