“So You Think You Can Dance” is beating a hasty retreat.
The Fox series drew a bevy of critics after a format change this season after two competitors (Carlos Garland and Brittany Cherry) were voted off at the beginning of the show, but then forced to return to the stage to perform the week’s dance. That drummed up accusations that not only was that emotionally difficult for the eliminated contestants, but it was also unfair to their partners as the newly-cut dancers may not be trying as hard.
However judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said on Thursday that the series will not keep that format moving forward.
“We’re taking your advice by revealing America’s vote in the beginning and judging at the end,” he posted on Twitter. “I hope it will inspire the bottom 4? Thank you”
This effectively means that the bottom four dancers will now have the chance to perform the week’s selected choreography and offer one last chance to make an impression judges before they decide which two will leave the show.
