“Psych” has landed Mira Sorvino for a multi-episode arc that will have her playing a police detective, USA Network announced Monday.
Sorvino, 45, will be seen in the long-running series’ upcoming eighth season playing “Betsy Brannigan,” described by USA as the new head detective of the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Police Department.

The USA announcement was short on details about how she’ll interact with “Psych” stars James Roday and Dule Hill. It said she will join the show in the upcoming season’s seventh episode and will remain in the show for an unspecified number of episodes.
The press release did have a rather lengthy description of the Brannigan character. “Betsy Brannigan [is] an incredibly sweet, adorably reserved and yet certified badass,” the writer of the press release insisted.
“Brannigan’s record for taking down ruthless criminals is rivaled only by her skills in sparkly craft making, and her seemingly bubbly demeanor can turn on a dime once she straps in the dual-wielded Colt .45s. She’s a scrapbooking, cat loving, crime-fighting machine.”
Sorvino won an Oscar in 1995 for playing a ditzy prostitute in the Woody Allen movie “Mighty Aphrodite.” Guest appearances on TV shows have been rare, although not unheard-of, for Sorvino over the years.
