Oxygen has officially cancelled “The Glee Project,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The reality competition series won’t be returning for a third season, the network announced Tuesday.
“‘The Glee Project’ will not be returning to Oxygen,” a network representative said in a statement. “But, we are extremely proud of this series which launched the careers of several talented individuals. The show had so much heart and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling.”
“The Glee Project,” a reality spin-off of the Fox musical dramedy “Glee,” was a talent search for bright young stars who had the opportunity to land roles as actual cast members on “Glee,” with many of the Gleeks themselves appearing on the show as the performers’ mentors.
Word that “The Glee Project,” which had been well-received by critics, was in danger of cancellation first started circulating in the spring. Industry insiders claimed it was due, at least in part, to Fox’s late renewal of “Glee” for a fifth season, which did not allow for the “Project’s” producers to get the show into production in time to have the winning cast member in place to coincide with “Glee’s” new season.
