Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters are on opposite sides of the whole royal baby hoopla that’s been ongoing this week following the birth of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge in the U.K.
Walters is enthusiastic about the baby and all the apparent interest on the part of Americans (particularly American news media). Whoopi, on the other hand, couldn’t care less, as she made clear in two days of discussions on the subject on “The View.”
Walters, 83, had a good reason to voice her support for royal-baby mania: She hosted a prime-time ABC News special about the newborn heir to the British throne Tuesday night on ABC.
But when she attempted to promote the special Tuesday morning on “The View,” Whoopi rained on her parade, announced she won’t be watching the show, and declared her apparent disinterest in the British royal family.
“A lot of people care,” Whoopi conceded when the subject of the royal baby arose during the show’s “Hot Topics” segment. “I don’t care personally,” she said.
When Walters heard that, she acted as if Whoopi was purposely steering potential viewers away from her prime-time show, especially when Whoopi added: “I’ll watch everything else, but not that one!”
On Wednesday morning, their battle-royal continued. Of course, the Walters royal-baby special had already aired the previous evening and drew 4.2 million viewers — not great, but not terrible for a Tuesday night in July. However, Whoopi remained dismissive as far as this baby is concerned. “OK, babies are cute,” Whoopi said, “but I’m over them.”
