Rep. John Lewis, a congressman from Georgia and an icon of the American Civil Rights movement, sat down with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview.

Colbert noted Lewis is the only living speaker from the historic 1963 March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a Dream” speech. Lewis will participate in the 50th anniversary of the march later this month.

Lewis has also co-written a new graphic novel about the movement called “March: Book One.” The book opens with the real-life story of Lewis being nearly beaten to death during a voting-rights march in 1965 at the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Alabama. The incident is popularly known as Bloody Sunday.
