Patrick Dempsey didn’t use the word “uncertain” to describe his future status on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but that’s the conclusion you have to reach when you watch what he said about it on “Late Show with David Letterman” Monday night on CBS.

Letterman expressed amazement at the ABC doctor drama’s longevity. “Ten years — this is remarkable,” Dave said to Dempsey, 47, who plays heartthrob doc Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on the series. “Grey’s Anatomy” starts its 10th season on ABC with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 9/8c.

“It’s extraordinary,” agreed Dempsey, who then fielded the big question about how much longer he’ll stick around on the show.

“How much longer will you go?” Letterman asked.

“Well, I think it depends on renegotiations, quite honestly,” Dempsey said candidly.

“Oh, really!” Dave said.

“I could stay, I may go — who knows?” Dempsey said.

To which Dave advised: “Dig in! Get all you can, my friend!”
