The “American Idol” judging saga continued late Friday night with the news that Harry Connick Jr. has agreed to come on board as the show’s third judge this coming season.

Citing an unnamed source “close to the show,” The Hollywood Reporter says it’s a done deal for Connick to join judges Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez for the show’s 13th season starting in January.

As happens often with these “Idol” judge stories, Fox had no comment. In fact, Fox has never confirmed the hiring of Lopez either, although for several weeks she’s been portrayed in numerous press reports as a done deal to rejoin the show. Urban has been confirmed as a returning judge.

Connick, 47, has long been rumored to be a candidate for a judging slot on “Idol” going back at least to last spring. This week, the rumors began heating up again. This new report on his hiring comes just days after negotiations to hire music producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald hit a snag and fell apart.
