Can’t Stop Watching: The Queen Returns Plus ‘Sleepy Hollow’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ & More

"Sleepy Hollow." (FOX)

This past weekend, cooler temps led me to ditch any outdoor plans and instead stay in bed, curled up with my iPad watching TV shows. I spent the previous week glued to my laptop working, so this was a welcomed change of pace. Thanks to the XFINITY Fall TV Fest, I watched the new ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs” before it debuts next week and then my regulars, “Boardwalk Empire” and “The White Queen.”

I also caught past episodes of  “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell,” which got quite a few chuckles out of me. Which shows would you curl up in bed to watch? Check out XFINITY’s Fall TV Fest for some ideas. [Watch here]

“The Queen Latifah Show” Arsenio Hall isn’t the only talk show host returning to television. Today people got a sample of the flavor Queen Latifah is adding to the talk show mix. “The Queen Latifah Show” debut scored big with A-lists guests and positive responses from viewers. Aside from her DJ, fellow legendary hip hop icon, MC Lyte,  Latifah also welcomed John Travolta, Alicia Keys (who surprised a high school music class) and a stunning Willow Smith (Lenny Kravitz designed the set!).  Judging from Twitter, people seem to have responded pleasantly to the show. Tomorrow, Willow Smith’s twin, her dad Will Smith, will chat it up with Latifah (Uh huh, I see show producer Jada Pinkett Smith is keeping it in the family). Other guests this week include Jamie Fox, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sharon Stone, Lisa Kudrow and The Soul Children of Chicago. And the show may host a “Living Single!” Aw, suki, suki, y’all! Take a sneak peak at Latifah in Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias.” [Watch here]

“Sleepy Hollow” Now, this is a show I am looking forward to seeing. Not just because I watched Disney’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” cartoon every Thanksgiving as a kid or that the story looks interesting (it does). In Fox’s new mystery-adventure “Sleepy Hollow,”  I like that Nicole Beharie, a very talented actress, gets an opportunity to strut her stuff in a lead role as Lieutenant Abbie Mills. She seems to do a good job. I believe many people will find her part in the story refreshing considering other portrayals of black women on TV.  And the same goes for Orlando Jones’ character, Captain Frank Irving, regarding black men. Black Americans are not a monolith; we have various interests, beliefs and habits, like everyone. And it’s good to see more and more TV shows reflecting this. “Sleepy Hollow” also stars Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane, an American Revolution soldier who experiences a “Rip Van Winkle” and wakes up 237 years later in modern-day Sleepy Hollow. And so does the Headless Horseman.  The “Sleepy Hollow” trailer is action-packed (as most) and for those who enjoy a story of good versus evil dealing with a touch of occultism and deciphering ancient artifacts (think “National Treasure”) then you’re in a for a treat. Watch the trailer to get a sneak peek and find out the roll the Bible plays. Here’s a clue: Sleepy Hollow’s population is 144,000. [Watch here]

“Dancing With the Stars” I’ve only seen this show a few times and it was usually when a friend or relative would insist I check out a contestants dances moves. Season 17 welcomes a new crop of hopefuls including “Glee’s” Amber Riley, Corbin Bleu of “High School Musical” fame, ex-NFLer and ESPN commentator Keyshawn Johnson, actress and singer Christina Milian, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of “Jersey Shore.” Of the 12 contestants vying for the mirror ball trophy, Valerie Harper may be the biggest surprise. Harper, best known for her roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and its spin-off “Rhoda,” was battling a rare cancer and given a few months to live earlier this year. She’s obviously pulled through and ready to show off her moves. Check out season 7 runner-up Warren Sapp discuss his “Dancing With the Stars” experience. [Watch here]

“The Mindy Project” I was probably one of the millions of people who followed Mindy Kaling to “The Mindy Project” from “The Office.” Kelly Kapoor was hilarious. And I liked “The Mindy Project” and watched several episodes and then it a few episodes reran and I got distracted by books and stopped watching. I will probably catch up on past episodes before watching this new season. Check out the first season before the season two premieres Tuesday. [Watch here]

“I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding” NeNe Leakes may be out of a gig since “The New Normal” got the ax but “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star is in no way hurting. Leakes’ “Housewives” spin-off, “I Dream of NeNe,” shows Leakes and her fiance Gregg Leake’s journey down the aisle … again. During the first five seasons of RHOA, we saw Leakes and Greg’s relationship appear to be loving and stable to dissolution and then reconciliation, which, obviously, explains this show. “We have a second chance to do it right,” as Leakes says in a trailer, and will do it with a $1.8 million price tag and a 15-carat diamond engagement ring. Oh, and nine “bridesmaidzillas.” People who can’t wait until the RHOA sixth season for Leakes’ one-liners can surely get some from this show. It premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo. Check out XFINITY’s footage from Nene and Greg Leakes’ 1997 wedding. [Watch Here]

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” I could totally see “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” having a following. It stars “Saturday Night Live” alumnus Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta, the 99th Precinct’s new captain. This new comedy reminds of “Psych” meets “Law & Order” without the fake psychic detective bit and thunk-thunk sound. And the show has a pretty multicultural cast with Terry Crews as Sergeant Terry Jeffords, head of the detective squad, Melissa Fumero as Detective Amy Santiago, Peralta’s partner, Stephanie Beatriz as Detective Rose Diaz and Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt, the 99th Precinct’s new captain. The show debuts Tuesday. Get a glimpse on XFINITY. [Watch here]

“Star Trek Into Darkness” I saw “Star Trek Into Darkness” when it opened a few months ago. And I remember really enjoying it (A friend treated me to a movie and was at first reluctant to see it but walked away pleased as well). Zoe Saldana was great as Uhura as were the other cast members. And… that’s about it. I really don’t recall the rest of the movie, just bits and pieces. Don’t let this reflect on J.J. Abrams’ directorial efforts; the past few months have been a roller coaster ride for me. So with that said, I will take the advice I’m dishing and will watch this movie again. Fortunately, I can re-watch it via XFINITY On Demand.  [Watch here]

“Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell” W. Kamau Bell may very well be the next big think in late nigh talk (I know, I know, Arsenio returned but more on that in a later post) He’s funny, intelligent, thoughtful and backed by another funnyman and one of my favorite comics, Chris Rock. Did I mention that he and his skits are funny? And I like funny! He had a weekly show last year on FX and it was such a hit, “Totally Biased’s” been extended to Monday through Thursday on FXX, FX’s new station aimed at young adults. Check out some of the past seasons shows. [Watch here]

“The Goldbergs” The promos for this new series got my attention. And when I watched the pilot, I could see why. It was funny and nostalgic. Yep, a pre-Facebook time where cassette tapes and Cabbage Patch Kids were the norm and MTV actually played music videos. “The Goldbergs” reminded me of Chris Rock’s nostalgic hit “Everybody Hates Chris” meets John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles.” Think a 1980s version of “The Wonder Years.” So check out the pilot for the 2013 show and let me know what you think? Was my assessment correct? [Watch here]

“Masters of Sex” I don’t know about you but I definitely will check out this new Showtime series before it premieres in two weeks. “Masters of Sex” follows the journey of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, trailblazers of the science of human sexuality. The pair were something in their day, often appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and even on the cover of TIME magazine. Considering the misguided notions many people have about sex, perhaps “Masters of Sex” will help shift those attitudes. See the pilot before it airs.  [Watch here]
