“Girls” has caught flak from critics for its mostly white cast, but Lena Dunham’s comedy is coming around. Danielle Brooks, who plays Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson on the celebrated Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” told Ebony in a recent interview that she has already shot an episode of the HBO show. “I will be the first Black woman to be on ‘Girls’,” Brooks said, “so that’s exciting for me.”
Dunham has made other moves towards a more diverse “Girls” cast; Donald Glover had a short turn in the second season, and Jezebel notes that Dunham Instagrammed a picture of “Daily Show” correspondent Jessica Williams getting dressed on the set earlier this year.
Season 3 of “Girls” will premiere next year. Former Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon is set for an appearance, and “Boardwalk Empire’s” Michael Zegen was cast earlier this year.
