Unfortunately, it’s not really news that many Americans don’t know diddly about their country’s history, even something as basic as Christopher Columbus’ “discovery” of the New World.
But it is always hilarious — and somewhat disconcerting — when the late-night shows put ordinary people to the test, and remind us anew that our country remains deficient in the teaching of history (or, at the very least, some of our fellow citizens are deficient in studying it).
Such was the case when a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” camera crew went out on Hollywood Boulevard on Columbus Day Monday to ask people about Columbus.
Our favorite response was the guy who said, “He came to America and he ate Thanksgiving.”
And here’s a runner-up: When asked to recite Columbus’ full name, one man said “Christopher Walken Columbus.” And he didn’t look like he was joking.
We recommend you watch the clip, above, titled “The Story of Christopher Columbus, According to Hollywood Boulevard” from Monday night’s “JKL.”
