Gabourey Sidibe is one witch you don’t want to mess with. The feisty actress stars as Queenie, a high-potential star student at Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies in FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven.” Oh, in case you haven’t already guessed it, the academy is a New Orleans-based school for witches. Queenie, who’s a mathematical genius, is also a human voodoo doll. Yeah …
“I think her name says it all. She’s a queen. She’s got some attitude. She’s a very, very strong personality. With this cast and these characters, everybody’s really a strong personality. And so, it gets her into trouble and it also gets her into pleasure, I think.” Sidibe said in a recent interview with AfterBuzz TV.
She shares the spotlight with an A-list cast including Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson in Ryan Murphy’s anthological series. The show premiered last week to rave reviews and the second episode, which airs tonight, tells us how Queenie ended up at Miss Robichaux’s. Working with award-winning talent is nothing new for the 30-year-old Sidibe. She got her start starring as an illiterate, abused inner-city teen mom in 2009’s “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” with Mo’Nique and starred with Laura Linney in Showtime’s “The Big C.” There also was “Tower Heist” with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, oh, and she did host “Saturday Night Live” in 2010. Sidibe earned an Academy Award nod for her role in “Precious.”
