Physical fitness expert Jillian Michaels plied her team with caffeine supplements on “The Biggest Loser” in violation of the competition’s rules, it was revealed on Tuesday night’s edition of the NBC reality show.

Michaels, a personal trainer, is one of the stand-out stars of the long-running franchise, and her doling out of the supplements led officials to discard all of the results from the episode that aired a week earlier.

That meant that contestant Ruben Studdard — the well-liked contestant who once won “American Idol” and who was eliminated in the now-marred episode — was able to return to the contestant ranks to continue competing.

The drama unfolded on Tuesday night’s show, when host Alison Sweeney broke the news about the rule violation, and the subsequent decision to disqualify the results from a week earlier. Sweeney made her announcement just prior to the final weigh-in segment on Tuesday’s episode.

“Before you all step on the scale, there is something important that needs to be addressed,” Sweeney said. “Last week, Jillian broke the rules and gave caffeine supplements to each member of her team without [a] doctor’s permission.”

Michaels’ team was then penalized with a reduction of four points — one for each team member — in addition to the previous week’s results being thrown out, according to this story on the “Today Show” Web site.

For her part, Michaels was defiant. She defended her decision to distribute the caffeine pills, describing them as no different than drinking a few cups of coffee. She said she disagreed that a doctor should be consulted before dispensing the supplements.

“I stand by my opinion,” she said. “A caffeine supplement is significantly healthier than unlimited amounts of coffee.

“My only regret is that my team, they’re the ones suffering the consequences of my professional opinion.”
