Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
At long last, all 325 episodes of ‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman’ are available on DVD with the release of the 38-DVD box set ‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman: The Complete Series.’ Bonus features include new essays by the show’s developer, legendary TV producer Norman Lear (All In The Family; Sanford and Son; The Jeffersons; Good Times; Maude), and Pulitzer Prize–winning TV critic Tom Shales, two documentary featurettes, and 10 original episodes of its delirious spinoff Fernwood 2 Night. Louise Lasser delivers a masterful performance in the title role of Norman Lear’s sublimely twisted soap opera, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman–at once a parody of the format and a twisted satire of America’s media/consumer culture. In the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio, suburban housewife Mary Hartman seeks the kind of domestic perfection promised by Reader’s Digest and TV commercials. Instead she finds herself suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune—mass murders, low-flying airplanes and waxy yellow buildup on her kitchen floor. Louise Lasser (Take the Money and Run, Bananas) leads off the strong cast of Greg Mullavey (Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, iCarly) playing Mary’s husband, Mary Kay Place (Big Love, The Big Chill), who won a 1977 Emmy for her role on the show as an aspiring country singer Loretta Haggers, Graham Jarvis (Misery, Guiding Light) as Loretta’s devoted husband, Debralee Scott (Police Academy, American Graffiti) as Mary’s younger sister, Victor Kilian (The Ox-Bow Incident, Only Angels Have Wings) as crusty Grandpa Larkin, Dody Goodman (One Life To Live, Grease) and Philip Bruns (General Hospital, Flashdance) as perhaps the strangest parents in television history, Dabney Coleman (Boardwalk Empire, Tootsie) as Fernwood’s slightly devious mayor, Martin Mull (Arrested Development, Roseanne) as identical twins Garth and Barth Gimble, and Claudia Lamb (Forever Fernwood) as Mary’s 12 year old daughter. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was unique in its creation, substance and style. In an essay written for the box set, Lear recalls developing the show’s premise. “I wanted it to play on two levels – funny to those who got the jokes but sufficiently compelling as drama to entertain those who didn’t. The recipe: Mix pop culture and satire, stir slowly and serve straight.” Facing networks that were unwilling to take a risk, Lear and his team created the show on their own with a first-of-its-kind syndication deal. They shot a pilot and sold the show to stations directly to build their first-run syndication, bringing critical acclaim and ratings success. Buy the complete series right here.

The Kid from Brooklyn (1946) sees Kaye playing a milquetoast milkman who masters the squared circle and romances a nightclub nightingale (Virginia Mayo). A Song is Born (1948) sees Howard Hawks re-envisioning his classic Ball of Fire as a superstar jazz musical, with Kaye in the Gary Cooper role and Mayo in the Barbara Stanwyck role as the moll who sweeps several professors off their feet. Dannye Kaye Double Feature
After his breakout success in the forties, and stints at an array of the major studios, Danny Kaye came to call Paramount Pictures home for much of the fifties. It was there that Kaye created some of his most memorable screen portrayals, as evidenced by the pair found in this collection (both of which enjoyed contributions from Kaye’s songstress spouse, Sylvia Fine). The epic comic fantasy The Court Jester (1955) sees Kaye playing a fool who gets embroiled in a plot to overthrow a tyrant king. Thanks to the amazing all-star cast (including Angela Lansbury and Basil Rathbone), a score courtesy of Sylvia Fine and Sammy Cahn, and creators Norman Panama and Melvin Frank (and Kaye’s considerable talents), The Court Jester is rightly considered a cinema classic. In The Five Pennies (1959), Kaye pairs up with Satchmo himself, the astonishing Louis Armstrong to bring the tale of Jazzman Red Nichols to life alongside a bevy of Big Band greats. Tuesday Weld makes her screen debut, too. Buy the Court Jester/5 Pennies DVD at WBshop.com.

In this wryly funny dark comedy, a stylish remake of George Cukor’s classic of the ‘30s, the trashy rub shoulders with the classy as reputations are ruined and the aspic falls. Dizzy society hostess Millicent Jordan (Marsha Mason) is planning an elegant dinner party for British royalty. But somehow the guest list winds up being a rogue’s gallery. Brassy Kitty Packard (Ellen Greene) is a tramp in designer clothes, while her crass tycoon husband (Charles Durning) is a shark in a feeding frenzy for his host’s shipping empire. If a hostile takeover doesn’t kill Oliver Jordan (John Mahoney), the appearance of this old flame Carlotta Vance (Lauren Bacall) will. But Carlotta isn’t just interested in reheating their love affair. She needs cold cash. And fading superstar Larry Renault (Harry Hamlin) would love to come to dinner, but he’s just dead… literally. He’s the victim of booze, cocaine and his massive ego. But there’s still plenty of list, greed, ambition and scandal to satisfy the enormous appetites of Millicent’s guests. It all boils over into an evening of delicious backstabbing humor in which everybody gets dished before dinner is even served. Buy the DVD at WBshop.com.
