Quick, think of a show that you go to for your LGBT characters and gay storylines?
I’d bet money that “Pretty Little Liars,” “Glee” or “Modern Family” came to mind but did anyone (outside you few smart alecks who only got the idea from the headline of this story) think of the CW action series “Arrow?”
Despite a massive amount of eye candy for LGBT viewers with Colton Haynes, David Ramsey and star Stephen Amell for the guys and Caity Lotz, Emily Bett Rickards and Willa Holland for the gals – as well as out Greg Berlanti as one of the show’s Executive Producers – the show has never really been that gay.
In last month’s “Heir To The Demon” episode, which reruns tonight on the CW, nobody was more surprised than diehard “Arrow” fans when Sara Lance (Lotz) was confronted by Nyssa Al-Ghul (Katrina Law) to come back to the League Of Assassins but instead of a fight to the death, the two kissed, revealing a much more personal relationship than anyone had imagined, including Oliver Queen (aka Arrow, played by Stephen Amell). (Sara and Nyssa made yesterday’s list of our favorite LGBT TV couples)
I recently talked to Lotz about the storyline for an AfterEllen.com story but I also was able to get Amell’s two cents on that story development, what the fans of the show and the Green Arrow comic book thought and how having two men in the same situation might cause different ruffles in fans.
Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8pm on the CW.
