Hello World! I hope you enjoyed your weekend as I spent the latter part of mine watching Oprah Winfrey interview Kevin Hart, observing the ladies of “Blood, Sweat & Heels” try not to kill one another and skimming headlines for news about your other favorite celebs. Read more below.
Alfre Woodard returns to TV. Alfre Woodard is the latest big screen goddess to make a return to TV. The Emmy Award-winning actress is set to star as U.S. President Roberta Payton opposite Katherine Heigl in the upcoming NBC drama “State of Affairs.” “Described as ‘Scandal’ meets ‘The West Wing,’ the drama revolves around a maverick CIA officer (Heigl) who was plucked from the field to become the president’s daily briefer, assuming responsibility for targeting America’s most critical threats while navigating the unique lifestyle that comes with such a high-powered job,” reports The Hollywood Reporter. TV is a familiar arena for Alfre. She’s been nominated for 17 Emmys, winning four for her television work on ”Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law,” “Miss Evers’ Boys” and “The Practice,” reports The Grio. I’ve noted several times how Oscar-nominated (and Oscar-winning) actresses like Viola Davis, Halle Berry, Sophie Okonedo, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Sidibe and Octavia Spencer all have TV projects in the works. Can we say thank you Shonda Rhimes and Kerry Washington? Read more here on Alfre’s project.
Oh, lawd–The “Blood, Sweat & Heels” reunion show. Yes, Oh, lawd, is what I thought when I stumbled upon the “Blood, Sweat & Heels” reunion last night. I took a break from this show a month ago. Between watching the ugly brawl and other chaos between good-and-grown people on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” and the disastrous Hamptons weekend on “Blood, Sweat & Heels,” I was pretty much over reality TV shows. OVER. But, I gave in and watched this reunion. Though cast member Mica Hughes threatened Demetria Lucas with her designer stilettos and several rounds of (verbal) shots were fired, it wasn’t as ugly as other reality show reunions have been (SIDEBAR: Why was this reunion show filmed at hosts Andy Cohen’s Clubhouse where “Watch What Happens: Live” is filmed?). The episode also reminded me of a few things: one, never do a reality TV show; two, some people will do anything to look more interesting on-camera; and three, be aware of what I say or do at all times, especially when a camera’s rolling (Thanks, Brie Bythewood!). Was the nine-episode show enough for Bravo to renew the show for a second season? We haven’t heard anything yet. Catch up on past episodes here.
Oprah Winfrey ♥ Kevin Hart. Oprah Winfrey has another favorite person! Legend-in-the-making funnyman Kevin Hart won the media maven over during his “Oprah Prime” interview Sunday. Kevin, who describes himself as “an open book,” told Oprah plenty about his personal life, including the close relationship he had with his late mother (she was a University of Pennsylvania professor–who knew?!), cheating on his ex-wife Torrei Hart, how his now-sober father used to embarrass him and going from broke to bankable star. My favorite moment? Watching Kevin interact with his son, Hendrix, and daughter, Heaven. He’s so good with his children and really works to keep them grounded, which a girl can always appreciate. Watch a clip from the show below.
On my watchlist? What I’m tuning in to see and what I’ll catch up with XFINITY On Demand…
“Once Upon a Time”: You know I love fantasy dramas so catching up on this is a must for me. Gotta see what’s up the Wicked Witch of the West’s sleeve. It airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Watch it here.
“The Walking Dead”: Another one of my Sunday favorites that I missed watching “Blood, Sweat & Heels” reunion show. It airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on AMC. Watch it here.
“Resurrection”: I caught “Crisis” this morning but didn’t get a chance to watch this other network show a brother taking charge. It airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. Watch it here.
The Hot List: Who/What’s Hot, Not
HOT: Today’s Dorothy Height Google Doodle (Cool! Maya Angelou shared a few stories about the “godmother” of the Civil Rights movement with me.)
NOT: Good and grown people fighting on TV (Yes, I know I’ve addressed this before, but it seems that certain reality shows prompt me to remind yet again.)
HOT: Aretha Franklin working on new music with Andre 3000 and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds (ReRe is one of my favorite singers and I love Andre and think Babyface is cool.)
NOT: Lauryn Hill experiences more tax woes (I think we all need to hold a candle light vigil for our girl–gotta get her over this hump!)
