Countdown To ‘The Fosters’: Maia Mitchell, David Lambert and Teri Polo Preview Season 2!

We’re counting down to Monday’s season premiere of the ABC Family series, “The Fosters” with a series of on-set interviews with the cast.

If there’s one new series last year that created more than a few headlines, it was ABCFamily’s The Fosters.”

However, the majority of those headlines were from stories supporting the series for showing viewers a truly modern family where the parents weren’t traditional (Teri Polo and Sherri Saum play a bi-racial lesbian couple who marry during the first season), the kids aren’t all blood-related (hence the play on words with the series title and the foster care system) and the problems have less to do with sexuality than the normal issues of growing pains, drugs, sex and, this being television, an occasional homicide. That said, the series does touch on misconceptions of sexuality though it never belabors the point and has also included the recurring character of Cole (played by Tom Phelan), a trans teenager  that comes into the family’s lives.

Since its debut barely a year ago, the series, which is also Executive Produced by Jennifer Lopez, the show has been racking up awards including a GLAAD Media Award for Best Drama Series,Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Breakout Show and earlier this month the show received The Honors Award by the Television Academy. The cast and creators Peter Paige and Bradley Bredweg also visited The White House last month for the show’s contributions to shedding light on the foster care system through the show.

I had the pleasure of spending a day on the set of “The Fosters” while they were shooting the second season to get a preview of what we can expect as well as how the cast has taken in the reception of the show and if it’s even changed their own perception of gay couples and families.

First up, Maia Mitchell told me about Callie’s journey at the start of the season and working with Rosie O’Donnell, who will return in the new season as Rita, the foster mother who had a big impact on Callie last year.

Of course, one of the romances on the show is between Callie and her potential foster brother, Brandon, played by David Lambert. What will their relationship be like moving forward now that Callie has put the family first over their attraction to each other? Lambert gave us a preview.

Finally, we’ve known Teri Polo from roles in monster hits like “Meet The Parents” but as Stef on “The Fosters,” she’s not only heading up the family but, with co-star Sherri Saum (who makes a cameo in Polo’s interview), she’s also part of one of the most loving couples ever seen on television. Let’s see what she has to say about Stef’s challenges in the new season.

Come back tomorrow for more interviews as we continue to countdown to “The Fosters” second season!
