Brendan Wayne: "'The Shootist,' to me, might be the best picture [John Wayne] ever made. I think the fact that I know the story behind the scenes makes a bit of a difference. I know, in retrospect, that he was dying of cancer during the shooting. He was playing a character who was dying of cancer. They had to shut down production just so he could gather himself to finish.
And then I watch his portrayal, and I watch it as an actor judging another actor, and I am so impressed by his ability to convey the confidence, the consideration. You get so many one-dimensional characters nowadays. He didn't get enough credit for his ability to carry a multi-dimensional character." (Photo: AP)
