Fans were shocked in 2005 when Dave Chappelle, seemingly at the peak of his career, suddenly left for South Africa during the filming of his self-titled show's third season. Many speculated that drugs or mental illness were behind his unexplained departure, but the comedian denied these claims.
"All that stuff about partying and taking crack is not true," he told Time magazine. "Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To support my partying lifestyle?" Chappelle never returned to the show and has since lived a quiet life out of the spotlight with his wife and children.
In June 2014, Chappelle tentatively stepped back into the public eye and performed several stand-up comedy shows at New York's Radio City Music Hall. —XFINITY Entertainment Staff
