Martin Luther King, Jr. Iconic Speeches

'I've Been to the Mountaintop'

"I've Been to the Mountaintop" is the last speech MLK gave before he was assassinated in 1968. MLK spoke mostly about the Memphis Sanitation Strike. The strike occurred because of the terrible mistreatment, discrimination, and accidental deaths at the workplace of African-American sanitation workers. In the speech, MLK pleaded for non-violent protests, better working conditions and for unity. The speech also seemed very prophetic as his closing statement discussed the likelihood of an untimely death. MLK was assassinated the day after this speech, but his words inspired people forever. —XFINITY Entertainment Staff
