Late Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe is a descendant of John Alden, who began his voyage to the New World as a crew member on the Mayflower rather than a passenger. Alden originally worked as the ship's cooper and was responsible for organizing and maintaining the onboard barrels. After the ship arrived at Plymouth, Alden decided to stay rather than return to England and went on to serve as Assistant Governor and Duxbury Deputy to the General Court of Plymouth. In addition, Alden was among the men to sign the Mayflower Compact, Plymouth's first governing document. —XFINITY Entertainment Staff (Photo by Harry Kerr/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
