'Star Trek' Then & Now

5 of 37

NOW: Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015)

Following his days aboard the USS Enterprise, Leonard Nimoy quickly joined the cast of the short-lived series "Mission Impossible." He returned to the "Star Trek" franchise for "Star Trek: The Animated Series," "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and six of the series' films. Nimoy wrote two autobiographies, 1975's "I Am Not Spock" and 1995's "I Am Spock." He appeared in the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot and its sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Nimoy died on February 27, 2015, at the age of 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, said the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Nimoy attributed the illness to decades of smoking. —XFINITY Entertainment Staff (Photo by Imeh Akpanudson/Getty Images)
