Gene Hackman as 'Lex Luthor'

Movies: "Superman" (1978), "Superman II" (1980) and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" (1987)

After gaining notoriety and an Academy Award nod in 1968 for his role in "Bonnie and Clyde," Gene Hackman was on the top of his game. The actor was offered and accepted the role of Lex Luthor in 1978's "Superman," a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He appeared in every subsequent Superman flick alongside Reeve, with the exception of "Superman III."

Throughout the course of his career, Hackman, now 86, has been nominated for five Academy Awards and won two. He has not appeared onscreen since 2004's "Welcome to Mooseport." —XFINITY Entertainment Staff (Photos: Warner Bros./Getty Images)
