Forbes: America's Top 10 Beaches of 2013

3 of 11

8. Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

Cape Hatteras was named America’s first National Seashore, back in 1953, and with good reason: 72 miles of vistas, a landmark lighthouse, historic fishing villages, beachcombing, fishing, surfing and a wild and woolly history of shipwrecks off its often rough seas. Dr. Beach says it’s also got “some of the best board surfing along the East Coast.” At its farthest, this barrier island in the Outer Banks is over 30 miles from the mainland.
