As sure as Memorial Day weekend heralds the unofficial beginning of summer across America, the annual announcement of the nation’s top 10 beaches by Stephen P. Leatherman, a.k.a. Dr. Beach, has become as much a tradition as baseball, barbecues, parades and that first sunburn by the shore.
South of Charleston, this public beach adds to the resort island's famed golf and tennis, with opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, walking, cycling, birding or harvesting ingredients for low-country cooking. But, Dr. Beach warns, Beachwalker’s top 10 status may be in danger: “There is concern about the proposal to build 50 houses and a steel revetment on the sand spit, in terms of its impact on animal life and visitor access.”
