Make Fiber Your Friend

Complex carbohydrates are a flat-stomach secret weapon, says Manhattan-based dietitian Sharon Richter, registered dietitian. “Unlike simple carbs -- think chips and cookies -- fruits, vegetables and whole grains are naturally packed with fiber, a nutrient that moves food through your body, reduces bloat, and has been shown to reduce body weight in numerous studies,” she says. Government guidelines recommend women get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day but most women get around just a third of that according to a recent study from the American Dietetic Association. To get your fill, Richter recommends choosing “real food” sources like oatmeal, apples and spinach, rather than fortified versions (think yogurt and fiber supplements that are added to water): “Foods that naturally contain fiber are low in calories but very filling, so you’ll end up keeping your calorie intake down without even trying,” says Richter.
