Use a Time Out

When you feel like you are about to blow, Lerner recommends calling for a timeout -- actually stopping the fight and walking away at this point. As she says, you can do this without criticizing or blaming. Just say, “I want to talk about this, but at a calmer time when my head is clearer. Let’s take a break for a few minutes." After a break, it’s hard to go back to yelling, Rubin says.
