iVillage: 10 Ways to Lower Blood Pressure Without Medicine

10 of 11

Stock up on Spuds

According to researchers at Los Angeles’ Pacific Western University, savoring a tasty, filling potato every day (as long as you eat it mashed, boiled or baked -- not fried) helps 81 percent of people get their blood pressure under control (and with just half their usual prescription meds).

Tubers are packed with potassium, chlorogenic acid and tryptophan -- and these compounds work hand-in-hand to relax and open the blood vessels that nourish your heart. For top-notch blood pressure control, eat the skin, suggest Pacific Western researchers -- that’s where most of the potato’s nutrients are stored. Despite their reputation as fattening fare, a surprising study at Pennsylvania’s University of Scranton shows that even when people eat 14 golf ball-sized potatoes daily, they don’t gain a pound. Sorry, carb-haters.
