The NFL players came close. They weren't far off when listing The Top 100 Players of 2011.
Just like Pro Bowl voting, though, reputation clouded some judgments. For example, Ray Lewis at 36 years old isn't the fourth-best player in the league. Maybe a couple years ago, but not now.
Along with age, health and injury risk have to be taken into consideration as well. Nonetheless, nothing kept Tom Brady and Peyton Manning from doing what they've done for the last decade -- battle for the top spot on my list of NFL players.
