After winning the President's Cup for having the most points in the regular season, many expected the Capitals to advance deep into the playoffs. After losing to Montreal in OT in Game 1 of the first round, Washington rattled off 3 straight wins to hold a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Canadiens then stormed back to win the series as goalie Jaroslav Halak only allowed 1 goal in each of the final 3 games. It was the first time that the 1-seed lost to the 8-seed after holding a 3-1 series lead.
