Philip Rivers/Charlie Whitehurst 2012 summary:
Once considered the best active quarterback yet to win a Super Bowl, Rivers experienced a second straight turnover-laden season in 2012. An awful offensive line and wide receiving corps that sorely missed the departed Vincent Jackson (Tampa Bay) contributed to his woes. Outlook:
A triumvirate of Mike McCoy (head coach), Ken Whisenhunt (offensive coordinator) and Frank Reich (quarterbacks coach) is responsible for helping Rivers get back on track in 2013. With a $1.3 million base salary, Whitehurst is a low-cost option as Rivers’ backup. Whitehurst, though, also has no ties to the new Chargers regime and isn’t guaranteed a roster spot. —Alex Marvez
