Cam Newton/Derek Anderson 2012 summary:
Newton, the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, got off to a bumpy start, but finished the season strong by leading Carolina to four straight wins. That helped head coach Ron Rivera keep his job despite a second straight losing campaign and change of general managers. Outlook:
The Panthers promoted quarterbacks coach Mike Shula to offensive coordinator following the departure of Rob Chudzinski to Cleveland as head coach. The belief is Newton will benefit from the continuity that comes with playing in the same offensive system. Anderson is an unrestricted free agent and third-stringer Jimmy Clausen could be in trouble with a new general manager (Dave Gettleman) in place. The Panthers, though, have enough salary-cap restraints that a high-priced backup behind Newton isn’t in the cards. —Alex Marvez
